That horse just won. How do I find the next one like it?

by Simon Walton

A horse wins, and the obvious question is how to find the next one like it. The answer is not the horse. It is the race. The video builds a system from one winning race in the System Builder, step by step.

Copy the race

We take a six-furlong Class 6 handicap at Newcastle on Friday 2 October, won by Blazing Son, and put its conditions in as six rules: the course, the all-weather, standard going, six furlongs to the nearest furlong, a handicap and Class 6. Run it, and you have every race like it since 2018. That is the starting point.

Two columns do the work

Open Breakdowns. IV shows how often a group wins against the average runner. A/E shows whether its price had already allowed for that. By starting price, the strike rate falls away from the favourites to the outsiders, as you would expect, but A/E stays close to one. The draw and the days since the last run tell the same story: the strike rate moves, and the price allows for it.

The last run

Horses that won last time win most often of all and beat their prices too, so they look like the angle. Horses beaten tenth or worse last time win less often than the average runner, yet beat their prices by more than any other big group. Before trusting either, read the note under the table: pick the best line out of several and a big Chi score can be luck, and here neither clears the bar.

The holdout check decides

Add the last-time winners as a rule and the verdict reads Fails in holdout: good for years, losing over the last twelve months. Swap in the horses beaten tenth or worse and the final year points the same way, though there are too few runs yet to call it proven. Treat it as a lead, not a promise.

Save it and switch it on

Save the system and switch it on. Whenever a runner fits, it appears on your Qualifiers hub and in the morning email, and the record since you saved it builds itself.
