Stop typing racecard figures into a spreadsheet: My Card and the whole-day CSV

by Simon Walton

One member told us this week that they type the same figures off the racecard into a spreadsheet every morning to build a shortlist. If that is you, My Card does the copying for you, and the day's figures arrive in your spreadsheet already in the columns you chose.

Build the layout once

On any racecard, open the My Card tab and click Customise. Start from a blank card and add the number, the horse, the jockey and the trainer first. Then open the Form Stats group and add each figure beside its run count:

  • Dist Runs and Dist PRB: the horse's previous runs in today's distance band, and how it did in them.
  • Gng Runs and Gng PRB: the same on today's going group.
  • DSLR Runs and DSLR PRB: the same after a similar break to today's (1-7, 8-21, 22-60, 61-180 or 181+ days).
  • T Runs L3M and T PRB L3M: how the yard does with horses that had the same number of runs in the previous 90 days as this one.

Name the layout and save it. It is then your card on every race.

Read each figure beside its run count

PRB is the percentage of rivals beaten: the average share of the field a horse finished ahead of. Always read it next to its run count. One run tells you far less than eight.

A dash is not a zero. A debutant has no record anywhere, so every Form Stats cell shows a dash. A horse that has run, but never off a break like today's, shows a dash in that column too. That is no evidence, not bad evidence. A horse that finished behind every rival in the runs it did have shows 0.0%, so the two never look alike.

Take the whole day into a spreadsheet

Click Print beside Customise. The window lists the day's races still to run, grouped by meeting. Tick Select all races and click Download CSV.

The file starts with the race (time, course, race name, class, distance, field size and going), then your columns in the order you built them. The columns and their order stay the same every day, so any formulas you set up still line up with the next day's file. In the file a blank stays blank and a real nought is written as a nought, so a sum or an average never counts a debutant as a horse that ran badly.

My Card and its CSV download are included with RaceMetrics Pro and Proform Premium. On Proform Premium the whole day comes in one file; RaceMetrics Pro files carry the first hundred runners. See the plans.
