Four rankings, one run: the rank tables in Breakdowns

by Simon Walton

Comparing four rankings at one course does not need four systems. Build it once with no rating rule, run it, and the Breakdowns tab lays every ranking out from the same run. The video does it at Wolverhampton, then Newcastle.

One system, no rating rule

In the System Builder, add two rules: Course (Wolverhampton) and Race Type (all-weather). Run it. That is every runner at the track since the start of 2023, before any rating has picked anyone out. Our earlier video answered the same question with four separate systems; this way is one run.

The rank tables

Open Breakdowns and the Ratings tab. Under Rank, Power Rating Rank has one row for each place in the ranking, top rated first, with Tissue Rating Rank, Pace Rating Rank and Speed Career Best Rank in the same list.

Read the win rate first. On the power rating and the tissue it falls away steadily from top rated down, which is what a rating is for. Then read A/E, actual winners against the number the Betfair Starting Price expected, where 1.00 means the market had them exactly right. Every row sits around 1.00: whatever the ranking knows, the market has already priced in. Speed and pace split the field less. On pace, the No rating row includes every horse held up in all of its last three runs, because those score nought.

The next course, and the next rule

For another course, change the course rule and run again; the four tables refresh for the new track. Six all-weather courses is six runs, not twenty-four.

When a row stands out on A/E, the + rule button beside it adds that line as a rule. Check it has the runs behind it first: a big figure on a few dozen runs is noise. At Newcastle nothing stands clear, so top rated on power goes in as the base, ready for the next rule you add.

The System Builder is included with Proform Premium and RaceMetrics Pro. See the plans.
